Stories of Self-healing

Frozen Shoulder

The day after Christmas, 2014 I woke up to throbbing pain in my left shoulder. I had slept on my left side all night and when I decided to get out of bed I couldn't move my left arm very high. I thought a warm shower would help but it didn't. I also thought that this pain would subside after a couple of days but it didn't. The pain was so intense all I could do was cry. When I realized after a few days it wasn't getting better, I decided to go to urgent care. There I received a sling to relieve the pain but it had no impact on the excruciating pain I was experiencing.

During the next six months I saw specialists, got MRIs and was offered cortisone shots (which I refused because I knew it wouldn't fix the problem). There were two incidences about a month apart where out of nowhere, I felt like someone was stabbing my shoulder muscle. The pain was so intense, all I could do was cry and breath through it.

I had no strength in this arm and in order to move it around I had to lift it and place in where I needed it to go.

After about six months of this BS I decide to try acupuncture and found a great place in Oakland, CA that offered affordable care in a community environment. When I explained my problem to the acupuncturist, I was shocked to hear him say that he is very familiar with my condition and will be able to help. To my surprise, after the treatment I was in considerably less pain and could elevate my arm to shoulder height, something I hadn't been able to do in six months.  By that night I was able to move my arm over my head.  I may have gone back for a second treatment but slowly over time the pain subsided.

Why am i sharing this story? Because if my health care provider had embraced Complementary and Alternative medicine, I would have been referred to an acupuncturist right after the event, wouldn't have had to suffer for six month and waste money on expensive treatments and doctor visits. So to anyone out there who has suffered from frozen shoulder, give acupuncture a try!
